Monster Blues by Garvals Monster Blues by Garvals
Quick thing on one of my favorite episodes from Aah! real Monsters!
Where Ickis escapes from home and meets blind blues-player that don't know that Ickis is a monster.
-
I wonder if creator of "Danny the Dog" was ispired by this episode? retron.hawara.com/vectorland/d…
-
In both situations we see a story of an outcast\monster that left his life and met a blind-musician guy who helps hero understand his true way.

...Oh my goodness, you're right. I didn't realize the connection before you pointed it out.

What a great picture. I loved Ickis' singing, and I looove your take on their designs. The texture work on the background is pretty neat, too!

cool picture dude. it seems this sort of story is quite popular with many shows but probably the best was the simpsons version.

"Blues?"
"I can hear it in your voice, son..."
"You do?"
"You know what the blues are."
"I do?"
"Sounds to me like you've been livin' 'em!"
"I have..."

Easily one of my all-time favorite episodes, right up there with "Baby It's You" and "Less Talk, More Monster"...

Truly magnificent, that was without a doubt the best episode of the series and you captured it so well.
I could never draw anything that awesome ever so I just had to do an angsty fic about what happens when humans and monsters become friends. Who wants to live forever, indeed? [link]

More likely K-C Animation's writers were inspired by the 1986 movie, "Crossroads", which featured the young Ralph Machio in the role of a classical music student, son of a famous father(sound familiar?) who was also a classical guitarist, who goes against the grain and is more interested in the Blues, specifically the music of Robert Johnson, who actually wrote most of the songs featured in this episode of "A!RM!". He finds out that a contemporary of the late Mr. Johnson is still alive and living in a nursing home, and that the old man actually knows of some "lost" Robert Johnson songs that were never published or recorded. Long story short, the old man becomes the young man's Blues mentor, just as Mr. Ellis Robinson does with Ickis.

You have NO idea how much I love this! This show is still one of my all-time favorites, and I credit it for re-introducing me to the joys of animated story-telling and character development. I was already an adult A!RM! aired on Nick, and thought that I was too old and too smart for "kiddie shows". I wound up watching it one Saturday when it was pouring rain outside, out of sheer boredom...and absolutely fell in love(maybe "got addicted" is a more accurate term). Dear little neurotic Ickis was by far my favorite, he and his laid-back dad. This episode remains at the top of my favorites list, since I am a HUGE fan of the Blues, and Nick actually cast a REAL Bluesman, the incomparable Taj Mahal, to voice "Ellis Robinson"...come to think of it, Taj was one of three Blues artists who appeared(in voice)on the show; Ickis's dad, Slickis, was voiced by Billy Vera, and even the monsters' obsessive antagonist, Simon the Monster Hunter, was voiced by Jim Belushi, who replaced his late brother, John, as front man for the Blues Brothers. Guess it just goes to show that anyone can have the Blues, monster or human! Heck, they even had a really famous Blues song in this episode, "When You Got a Good Friend", by the great Robert Johnson! Ickis showed some pretty remarkable musical talent here himself, quickly picking up on the basic notes and learning how to play harmonica in one night; in my little head-canon he kept visiting over and over, learning the guitar as well..."Joe BonaMONSTER", anyone?

You should do some more A!RM! art, because I love your style, and there seems to be a bit of renewed interest in that Nicktoon lately. Foreshadowing, perhaps? I sure hope so! I just read on here that Klasky-Csupo Animation Studios is back in business, and that they had a booth at Comic Con, and Charlie Adler(who only voiced one K-C character that I know of, and that was Ickis)was with them. I dunno, but maybe there's plans in the works for a spin-off series or a movie, who knows? I know that they actually DID have a movie planned, but Nick canceled it because they said it was "too dark". "Too dark"? Sounds like something I'd love!
